Wiley Stadium in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania.

With the win, Thomas More improves to 1-1 overall and 1-0 in the PAC.  Waynesburg falls to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the PAC with the loss.

Thomas More never trailed in the game as it led 20-0 after one quarter, 20-6 at halftime and 34-19 after three quarters. 

Thomas More opened the scoring with 6:43 left in the first quarter when freshman running back Anthony Knott (Louisville, Ky./Seneca) scored on a 44-yard touchdown run and sophomore placekicker Dustin Zink (Newport, Ky./Newport Central Catholic) added the point-after-touchdown and the Saints led 7-0.

Then the Saints increased their lead to 14-0 at the 4:24 remaining in the first quarter when Stellman threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Chris Farley (New Albany, Ind./New Albany) which capped a five play, 50 yard scoring drive.  Zink added the PAT.

Thomas More then extended its lead to 20-0 when Stellman connected on a 25-yard touchdown pass to freshman wide receiver Nick Olthaus (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) with 32-seconds remaining in the first quarter to cap a six play, 83 yard scoring drive.  Zink missed the PAT.

In the second quarter, Waynesburg cut into the Saints’ lead when placekicker Robert Heller made a 48-yard field goal with 6:57 left in the half to make the score 20-3.  The Heller and Yellow Jackets weren’t down as he made 34-yard field goal to cut the lead to 20-6 with 4:12 remaining in the second quarter.  Thomas More led, 20-6, at halftime.

The third quarter began with Waynesburg cutting into the Saints’ lead again as Heller booted a 38-yard field goal with 12:34 left in the third quarter to make the score 20-9 in favor of Thomas More.

Thomas More responded as it drove 64 yards in seven plays to make the score 27-9 with 9:49 left in the third quarter when Knott had a 16-yard touchdown run and Zink added the extra point.

Then Waynesburg’s Heller connected on another long field goals this time from 49-yards to make the score 27-12 with 6:16 remaining in the third quarter.  After stopping the Saints’ offense on the next series Waynesburg’s punt returner Scott Cree returned the Saints’ punt 88-yards for a touchdown and Heller added the PAT and the lead was  27-19 for Thomas More.

Thomas More then responded to increase the lead to 34-19 when Stellman connected on a 29-yard touchdown pass to junior running back Cordario Collier (New Albany, Ind./New Albany)  with 2:54 left in the third quarter.  Zink added the PAT.

In the fourth quarter Waynesburg cut the lead to 34-26 when running back Billy Becker scored on a six-yard touchdown run and Heller added the PAT with 4:30 left in the game.

Both teams couldn’t find the end zone over the final 4:30 and Thomas More went onto the 34-26 win.

Offensively, the Saints were led by Stellman who was nine-of-25 passing for 178 yard and three touchdowns and also rushed the ball 10 times for 68 yards.  Collier carried the ball 11 times for 55 yards and also caught five passes for 75 yards and one touchdown.  Olthaus had two catches for 77 yards and had a touchdown.

On defense, Thomas More was led by junior linebacker Brad Steinmetz (West Harrison, Ind./East Central) who recorded 16 tackles including two for losses.  Junior defensive back Martez Williams (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller) had 10 tackles and two breakups.  Junior defensive back Josh Schmitz had nine tackles and one interception.  Sophomore linebacker Matt Clark (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) had eight tackles and sophomore defensive lineman Greg Dixon (Ft. Wright, Ky./Covington Catholic) had six tackles, including two for losses and a sack.

The Saints return to action next Saturday (September 27, 2008) when they return to campus to open The Bank of Kentucky Field as they host Westminster College at 1:30 p.m.

The Thomas More College football team fell, 41-14, to John Carroll University today (Saturday, September 6, 2008) in their 2008 season-opener at Dixie Heights High School Stadium in Fort Mitchell, Kentucky.

With the loss the Saints fall to 0-1 on the season and with the win the Blue Streaks improve to 1-0.

John Carroll led 14-7 after the first quarter, 28-7 at halftime and 38-7 after the third quarter.

The Blue Streaks jumped out to a 7-0 lead at the 10:13 mark of the first quarter when Matt Petruziello threw a two-yard touchdown pass to Peter Spachner and then Josiah Kedzior kick the point-after-attempt.  Then the Saints tied the score at 7-7 when junior running back Cordario Collier (New Albany, Ind./New Albany) scored on a four-yard touchdown run and sophomore placekicker Dustin Zink (Newport, Ky./Newport Catholic) added the PAT. 

John Carroll went on to score 34 unanswered points, but the Saints didn’t give up as they put together a drive.  Starting with the ball on their own 28-yard line with 7:50 left in the game, the Saints went 72-yards in 10 plays and Collier scored from two-yards out and Zink added the PAT at the 3:45 mark of the fourth quarter.

Offensively, junior quarterback Trevor Stellman (Burlington, Ky./Conner) was 14-of-25 passing for 114 yards and senior wide receiver Nick Dew (Newport, Ky./Newport Catholic) was his favorite target as he pulled down six catches for 43-yards.  The Saints were led on the ground by freshman running back Anthony Knott (Louisville, Ky./Seneca) who had five carries for 47-yards and Collier with 10 rushes for 33-yards and two touchdowns.

Sophomore linebacker Matt Clark (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) led the defense as he had nine total tackles.  In addition to Clark, sophomore defensive back Aaron Monk (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) had 8.5 tackles and junior defensive back Martez Williams (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller) had 6.5 tackles.

The Saints have a bye week next week before traveling to Waynesburg, Pennsylvania on September 20 to open their Presidents’ Athletic Conference schedule by playing Waynesburg College at 1:30 p.m.

Welcome to the TMC Winner’s Circle! 

Coach Hilvert invites all parents to become involved in this organization.  We will have a table set up at the picnic on Aug 23 – please stop by and sign up to get more information.  It is a very exciting time to be a part of the Thomas More Football Family!

v     Spirit Items for Sale.  A Spirit Wear order form is enclosed.  Check out tmcfootball.com for pictures of available items, and for other TMC football information (the site is great).!  Order forms will also be available at our family picnic and at all games. 

v     Camp.  Players report August 11: check in from 9 to 2, welcome meeting at 3:00, and physicals for those who need them at 5:00.

v     Scrimmage, Family Picnic, and Pictures are scheduled for Saturday, August 23.  Meat for the picnic has been donated.  Please bring a covered dish to share and your own drinks (no alcohol).  Pictures are scheduled for 8:00 a.m. with the scrimmage at 9:45 and picnic immediately following.  If you would like to help cook please stop by the grill.

v     Scrimmage at Wilmington is Saturday, August 30 at 11:00.

v     Bakers Wanted.  The school provides meals for the players for away games.  We are seeking volunteers to provide cookies and snacks for the boys on the return trip home.  To volunteer, please contact one of the Winner’s Circle members listed below or sign up at the picnic.

v     Banquet.  Jackie Myers and Cinda Louden are working on this area.  The banquet is currently scheduled for Dec. 7 at Briarwood.

Thomas More Football Program will be taking another step this year by holding it's own golf scramble.  The TMC all-sports scramble is nearly filled every year and in order to make a substantial jump in participation by football supporters, a new scramble is required.  This will give football a chance to maximize its own event and have total creative control.  It will also assure that everyone on the course that day will be a football person and which should be more appealing to all of us.   Please get your group together and save the date so we can bring back as many alums as possible.  We'd like to make this a yearly event and success in the 1st year is critical.  We are shooting for 25-30 groups in year one.  If you have ideas on how to make this year's event an even  bigger success or would like to sponsor a portion of the event please contact Jim Hilvert.  The scramble will include lunch at the course, door prizes, hole awards, a silent auction, and dinner immediately afterward at Dickmann's Sports Cafe.

I am part owner of a westside bar, The Scorebard Sports Bar, and I will be setting up travel accomodations to all home and away games throughout the 2008 season from the bar on Saturdays. With my crew of family and friends, we'll have enough people to fill at least 1/2 of a bus each and every week. I have contacts that will facilitate us receiving a formidable deal on the transportation every week. I can provide all of the proper tailgating needs and I'm looking to price it out to see what the final cost would be for all of us. Everyone has an open invitation to contact me should you want to take advantage of this way of travel. Even with the home games, it makes sense for our group to travel together with no worries.
